Stress

How does stress affect us?

Stress on our bodies can be categorised into three main areas: chemical, emotional and physical stress.

Overloading your body with stress increases your risk factors for ill health and disease – be it cardiovascular disease or poor immune response. At Putney Chiropractic we actively promote a healthier lifestyle by initially identifying the sources of stress and then take action to help you minimise your exposure to these stressors.

Types of stress

Chemical stress

Chemical stress refers to an imbalance of chemicals in the body, which in turn affects the body’s ability to function efficiently. The main causes of chemical stress are either internal (diet, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, unnecessary prescription or over the counter medication) or external (environmental pollution, chemicals in cleaning products).

Emotional stress

Emotional stress is a little more self explanatory and unfortunately can be considered by many as a normal state of being. Work, family, relationships and city life can all be significant sources of stress which, in turn, can have an enormous effect on our body’s ability to function well.

Physical stress

Physical stress is not always something drastic, such as an injury or strain. One of the most damaging things to our bodies can be sitting down for long periods of time. Prolonged sitting can gradually alter the muscles in your back, resulting in misalignment of your spine and therefore disruption to your central nervous system. Other physical stressors include repetitive lifting and bending, a full-time athletic schedule, or family-related lifting (such as bending and chasing little ones).

How we can help

Chiropractic adjustments can realign your spine and restore a natural and healthy balance to your central nervous system, enabling the body to better heal itself and cope with the stresses of life in a more effective way. Eradicating spinal misalignments can also relieve muscle tension, improve circulation and help your body return to a balanced and relaxed state.

Our chiropractors will not only focus on the physical aspects of stress, they will also work with you to try and find solutions to reduce the stress in your life, thereby resulting in a calmer, happier and more productive you.
